Self-exclusion and blocking · September 29, 2026

Bets were banned in Brazil. What about the urge?

The law changed all at once, and an urge does not disappear with a law. Here is what changed, what to do about the urge and the debts, and where to read the official text.

On September 25, 2026, Provisional Measure 1.394 banned fixed-odds betting in Brazil. It orders sites and apps taken offline within ten days, ends the authorizations after thirty days, bars banks and instant payments such as Pix from processing these transactions and bans advertising. Traditional lotteries are not included.

A provisional measure takes effect on publication, but Congress still has to vote on it, and the text can change. That is why iQuit does not treat the law as the solution: it can change, and the urge looks for another door.

If you lost access and still feel the urge, that does not mean you are failing. The risk now is switching doors: sites based abroad, underground casinos, the illegal numbers game known as jogo do bicho, crypto casinos. There is no guarantee of payout or complaint channel there, and the scam risk is higher.

iQuit Bet was built to get through that hour without switching doors: a free SOS, blocking on the device and at the bank, a 30-day plan and a debt tracker, because debt does not end with a law.

What to do, in any scenario

  1. What changed

Since September 25, 2026, a provisional measure bans fixed-odds betting in Brazil. It depends on Congress and can change. Urges and debts do not disappear with a law, so the rest of this guide holds in any scenario.

  2. Offshore sites and underground casinos

When one door closes, others appear: sites based abroad, underground casinos, the illegal numbers game known as jogo do bicho, crypto casinos, and lottery or scratch cards used too much. There is no guarantee of payout or complaint channel there, and the scam risk is higher. If an urge takes you toward one of those doors, use SOS before you open anything.

  3. Block it yourself

The government can take sites down, but others pop up. Install a blocker on your phone and computer (see the blockers section), delete accounts and apps, and ask someone you trust to keep the blocker password.

  4. Report an illegal site or ad

The Secretariat of Prizes and Bets takes reports through Fala.BR, the federal government's ombudsman platform. Reporting does not fix your urge, but it can help get the site taken down.

  5. Balance and open bets

The measure orders balances and open bets to be returned by tax ID, through the banks. Check with your bank and official channels: iQuit does not know the deadline or the amount. Be wary of any message that asks for your data or a fee to release money.

  6. The debts stay

Debt does not end with the law. Check your debts and accounts in the financial system through Registrato, from the Central Bank, talk to your bank before you fall behind, and use Consumidor.gov.br to complain about a company that bills you wrong. The debt tracker in the app puts it all in one place.

  7. Free health support

The SUS, Brazil's public health system, offers free mental health teleservice for problems tied to betting, for the person who bets and for family, through Meu SUS Digital. Check there that it is still available. The CAPS are public mental health services. If it feels like there is no way out, call the CVV, 188, now.

Why the next bet feels like it fixes the last one

Most people who bet more than they would like do not see themselves in a label. What they see is the month that ended before the month did, the account that does not add up, the secret that weighs more than the amount. The urge tends to come at night, on the phone, on payday or right after a loss.

The World Health Organization estimates that about 1.2% of adults worldwide have a gambling disorder, and that only about 0.14% of people seek help, formal or informal, for current gambling problems. Stigma and shame are the barrier, and for each person gambling at high risk, on average six others are affected. The NHS lists among the signs betting more than you can afford to lose, chasing losses, borrowing money to bet and feeling guilty.1, 2

iQuit Bet gives no tips, talks about no odds and promises no money back. It counts the days and the money that stayed with you, gives you a plan for the hour of the urge and helps you look at the debts calmly. The enemy is the product designed to hook you, never you.

The method

How iQuit Bet works

The iQuit Method, applied to betting: four ideas, thirty days, a few minutes a day.

  1. Question

Write why you want to stop (money, sleep, peace at home) and look at the beliefs that hold the bet up: "I almost won", "I will win it back", "I know the sport", "it is an investment". Each one is tested against your own numbers, without a lecture.

  2. Urge

The urge comes in a wave and passes. The SOS walks you through four minutes: take the money out of reach, put a block in place and pick one of twelve practical exits, with a crisis line halfway through.

  3. Identity

You map your triggers, like payday, game time, a promotion, late at night and right after a loss, and write an "if this, then that" for each. The self-exclusion and blocker guide closes the doors on your phone and at your bank.

  4. Track

Days, the money that stayed with you and a debt tracker. A slip is data, not a verdict: what counts is the next 24 hours. There is a mode to stop for good and one to cut down with limits.

What is inside

The iQuit Method for people who want to quit betting or bet less. Start free and cancel any time.

  • Money not bet

Every day without betting is money that stayed with you.

  • Debt tracker

Looking at the numbers calmly takes the weight out of the dark. Write down what you owe, what you pay per month and the due date.

  • Self-exclusion and blocking

Self-exclusion means formally asking to be barred from betting sites. Blocking means closing the doors on your phone and at your bank. The two together work better than either one alone. What exists changes from country to country.

  • Blockers and locks

Self-exclusion makes the sites bar you. Blocking makes your device bar the sites. The strongest is to combine both and leave the password with another person.

  • A 30-day plan

A two-minute lesson, one action and a check-in each day.

  • An SOS for cravings

Breathe, ride the wave, remember why. One tap away.

  • Days, money, time back

Watch what you gain grow, day after day.

  • Private by design

No account. What you write stays on your phone.

SOS is always free. Urges do not ask for a subscription.

What can change over weeks and months

From the first hour to the first year, with a source where there is one. Part of this timeline is the app's arithmetic on the money left out of bets, not medical data.

No promise of getting money back or of a cure. Blocks and support stay part of the road.

  1. 1 hourThe first hourThe counter has started and no money has left your account. The urge may show up as an impulse to check your phone. That is normal, and SOS is there. There is nothing medical to say here, only the start of the count.
  2. 12 hoursThe first nightFor many people, the night, alone with the phone in hand, is the riskiest window. Keep the money out of reach and the phone out of bed. SOS is always free. After half a day, the app already adds up half a day of the amount you did not bet.
  3. 24 hoursOne full day without bettingOne day of the weekly amount you entered stayed out of any bet. It is the app's math, not medical data, but it is money that stayed with you.
  4. 2 daysThe secret weighs more than the billThe WHO estimates that only 0.14% of the population seeks help, formal or informal, for current gambling problems, and that stigma and shame often get in the way. Two days in, the secret is usually the heaviest part. Telling just one person already helps.1
  5. 3 daysThree days without bettingThe counter shows the money kept out so far. Sleep and mood can be rough, and that does not mean you are doing badly. There is no promise here, only three days that happened.
  6. 5 daysFive days without chasing a lossThe NHS lists trying to win back what you lost, borrowing money to bet and feeling guilty among the signs of a gambling problem. Five days without a bet are five days without a chase. It is a pause in the pattern, not a cure.2
  7. 1 weekOne week, and why the app countsA meta-analysis of 138 studies, with 19,951 people, showed that monitoring progress toward a goal helps you reach it, more so when the record is written or public (d+ = 0.40). That is why the app counts days and money. The effect is medium and does not guarantee your result.3
  8. 2 weeksTwo weeks: a payday has probably passedNHS advice to consider: on payday, pay the important bills first, by autopay or a scheduled payment. The money leaves with a job before the urge shows up.2
  9. 3 weeksThree weeksThree weeks of the weekly amount you did not bet. For many people, the habit of checking the phone starts to loosen around now. It is worth noticing whether that is happening for you, without treating it as a certainty.
  10. 30 daysOne month without bettingAbout 4.3 weeks of the amount you did not bet. It is a good time to review the plan and the blocks: what held, what still weighs, what needs reinforcement.
  11. 45 daysSix weeks: look at the numbersThe NHS advises facing debts instead of ignoring them and looking for a free debt advice service, such as National Debtline in the UK. The app's debt tracker shows how much has been paid. Looking at the numbers is a moment, not an obligation.2
  12. 60 daysWhat research says about therapyA Cochrane review (14 studies, 1,245 people) found that cognitive behavioral therapy did better than the comparison group at 0 to 3 months, and motivational interviewing reduced financial loss over the same period. Only one study followed people for 9 to 12 months, with smaller effects that were not significant. The quality of the evidence is low to very low. Professional help has some support in the short term, and the app does not replace it.4
  13. 75 daysThe people around youThe WHO estimates that for every person with high-risk gambling, on average six others are affected. The people who live with you carried this too. Rebuilding trust is slow and is done with openness, on no set schedule.1
  14. 90 daysNinety days without bettingAbout 12.9 weeks of the amount you did not bet. The app celebrates the milestone without saying the risk is over. Blocks and support remain part of the road.
  15. 6 monthsSix months: check your self-exclusionSeveral self-exclusion programs have a minimum length of 3 to 6 months (GAMSTOP 6 months, BetGuard 6 months, BetStop 3 months, SRIJ 3 months). See when yours ends and decide on purpose whether to renew. The counter adds up the money that stayed out in that time.
  16. 1 yearOne year without bettingFifty-two weeks of the weekly amount you did not bet. Keeping blocks and support is part of a year like this. The app does not say the risk is over, only that every week was chosen.

Questions, answered

Bets were banned in Brazil. What now?

Since September 25, 2026, Provisional Measure 1.394 bans fixed-odds betting in Brazil. It still depends on Congress and can change, so do not treat it as the end of the story.

A law closes doors, but the urge and the debts stay. If the urge takes you toward a site abroad, an underground casino, jogo do bicho or a crypto casino, use the SOS before you open anything: there is no guarantee of payout or complaint channel there. Install a blocker and leave the password with someone you trust. Check your balance and open bets with your bank and the official channels, and be wary of any message that asks for your data or a fee to release money.

How does iQuit Bet help me stop betting?

It gives you a 30-day plan with one short lesson a day, a free SOS for the urge, a counter of the money not bet, a debt tracker, a self-exclusion and blocker guide by country and a daily check-in. There are two modes: stop for good, or cut down with limits.

The app counts days and money because tracking progress helps people reach goals: a meta-analysis of 138 studies with 19,951 people found a medium effect, larger when the record is written or public. It does not guarantee your result.3

Do I have a problem with betting?

Only a professional can say. The NHS lists signs worth noticing: betting more than you can afford to lose, needing to bet larger amounts, chasing losses, borrowing money to bet and feeling guilty about it. If several of those sound familiar, it is worth talking to someone.

You do not need a label to want your money, your sleep and your peace back. The WHO estimates that about 1.2% of adults worldwide have a gambling disorder.2, 1

Why do "I almost won" and "I will win it back" keep me betting?

A near miss loses exactly like any other loss. And chasing losses, the idea that the next bet fixes the last one, is one of the warning signs the NHS lists. The money that left does not wait for the next round.2

What about my debts?

The debt does not end with the bet or with a law. The NHS advises facing debts instead of ignoring them and looking for a free advice service, like National Debtline in the UK. The debt tracker in the app puts what you owe, what you pay each month and the due dates in one place. Looking at the numbers is a moment, not an obligation.

In Brazil, you can check your debts and accounts in the financial system through Registrato, from the Central Bank, talk to your bank before you fall behind and use Consumidor.gov.br to complain about a company that bills you wrong.2

Do self-exclusion and blockers work?

Self-exclusion means formally asking to be barred from betting sites. Blocking means closing the doors on your phone and at your bank. Together they work better than either one alone, and the strongest setup leaves the password with another person. What exists changes from country to country, so the app has a guide by country with the date it was checked.

The NHS also suggests asking your bank to block payments to betting sites and paying your bills on payday, so the money already has a destination before the urge shows up.2

What if I slip and bet?

A slip is data, not a verdict. What counts is the next 24 hours. Thinking "I ruined everything" is what raises the chance of relapse, a pattern known as the abstinence violation effect. Move the money out of reach, tell one person and go back to the plan today.5

What does research say about therapy?

A Cochrane review of 14 studies with 1,245 people found that cognitive behavioral therapy did better than the comparison group at 0 to 3 months, and motivational interviewing reduced financial loss over the same period. The evidence was low quality, and only one study followed people for 9 to 12 months, with smaller and non-significant effects.

The WHO says the treatments with the most evidence are long-term cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing, and that self-help and mutual support have less. An app is a companion, not a treatment.4, 1

Can I help someone in my family who bets?

iQuit Bet is for people who want to change their own habit, but the helplines below are for family too. The WHO estimates that for each person gambling at high risk, on average six others are affected. In Brazil, the SUS offers free mental health teleservice for problems tied to betting, for the person who bets and for family, through Meu SUS Digital. Check there that it is still available.1

Do I need an account? Is it private?

No account. Your check-ins, debts and notes stay on your phone. We only count anonymous events, like "opened the SOS", to improve the app. There are no ads.

Is iQuit Bet free?

You can start free. The SOS is always free, and so are the first days of the plan: nobody puts a paywall in front of you when an urge hits. The store shows the price of the full plan before you confirm anything, and you can cancel anytime.

Is it for people under 18?

No. iQuit Bet is for adults 18 and over. If you are younger and worried about betting, talk to a parent, a school counselor or a doctor.
